The International Children's Fashion Trade Fair (FIMI) in Valencia – held January 22-24, 2010 - united offerings from Spanish and international brands for autumn/winter 2010/11. Visitors to the event, which this year celebrated its 70th anniversary, saw first-hand the strong environmental awareness of many of the brands, as well as a notable defence of design as a distinguishing feature in times of difficulty.
Custo Barcelona's children's line, Custo Growing, was one of the strongest offerings. Followers of its main line can now dress their little ones in streetwear wich features the psychedelic colourfulness synonymous with the brand. The collection, aimed at girls and boys between four and 14, was presented at FIMI and Pitti Bimbo, in Florence simultaneously. It is a complete wardrobe full of wonder, with all-purpose garments designed to be thrown in the washing machine, including the shoes and coats.

Tuc Tuc continues to extend and diversify its wares in its determination to set trends. Its range of graphics is now endless, a multitude of tiny universes inhabited by friendly characters. Some designs feature oversized flowers with an air of the 1970s, others have geometric variants, checks and stripes. The cuts are some of the most modern seen at the show with flounced skirts and multi-coloured cocoon coats.

Bóboli also wanted to play an ecological role at the same time as looking after the skins of babies from 0 to six months, with its New Born collection, made with cotton free from artificial pesticides fertilisers. For bigger kids, the brand presented a more casual and urban style based on tracksuits, sweaters in nautical stripes or black and white checks, loose shirts and chinos.

Fun colour combinations dominated the Akr Kids stand. Leggings, hunting jackets, shirt dresses, cardigans, mini skirts, tracksuits, blousons and sweaters feature a vibrant clash of green, fuchsia, red, yellow, pink and blue. The brand continues to be faithful to its informal, relaxed style, with items that have a comfortable, sporty look for everyday wear.

Lourdes has once again won over big kids and little ones with a collection in which patterns rule. For the younger wearer, it offered happy doll motifs in a plethora of colours that contrast with the simple sand, navy and cerulean tones of the garments. The A-shaped bibs, nautical sweaters, ribbed frogs and cargo pants dominate the collection, that also offers surprising, fun tulle skirts for modern ballerinas.

Small classics
For special occasions, Barcarola dresses its little princesses in sunray pleated dresses and Prince of Wales check, or in lace designs decorated with satin flounces. A pampering touch is given to the outerwear items, with delicate tweed deigns, satin raincoats in ochre or caramel leather with fur neck and collar.

The Tutto Piccolo collection is all delicateness and romanticism. Checks and block colours are mixed to create pretty puffball dresses and designs with puff sleeves and flounced skirts. For boys, it went for classic jerseys and checked waistcoats, corduroy trousers and basic navy blue duffle coats.

Elisa Menuts blended subtlety and formality in its autumn/winter 2010/11 collection. The polka dot-front puffball dresses feature contrasting side print, adorned with velvet bows and matching boleros.
Veteran house Foque followed a similar line, where natural tones dominated - green, cerulean, sand - with each item featuring exquisite details. Polka dots and lace blend tradition and playfulness in original baby-neck dresses.

A small step for man…
Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada exhibited its children's footwear collection at FIMI, developed by Garvalin. Patent leather and rubber soles were a common theme in the collection, which included pumps and booties with heart appliqués and mid-length boots with metallic laces. Wellington boots, decorated with the distinctive Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada print, were not forgotten in the brand's winter collection.
