    NEXT DATES

    Setember 10-14, 2008

Monday 18 February marked the final day of the 39th International Jewellery, Silverware, Watch and Related Industries Exhibition, otherwise known as Iberjoya. A total of 525 exhibitors had come to Madrid to display their collections over an area of 15,135 sq. m. Of these, 347 were Spanish and the remaining 178 from countries as diverse as Germany, Belgium, the USA, France, Greece, Italy, UK and Turkey.

The exhibition opened on February 14 and was followed by the traditional Iberjoya gala dinner on February 15. During the evening, a spectacular sound and light show led into the Iberjoya Trends Presentation. This year entitled Alice in JewerLand, the eagerly-awaited event filled the Feria de Madrid convention centre with the very latest colour and elegance from leading watch and jewellery brands.

From quartz to kryptonite
One of the major novelties at this edition of Iberjoya was the fashion and jewellery display organised by leading Spanish jeweller Pedro Durán and young designer Rubén Gómez, entitled Gómez’s Caprices. A series of mannequins wore Gómez’s designs alongside pieces from the Krypton collection he has created for Pedro Durán. The stone that took Superman's powers away was the inspiration for sensual designs in “cosmic” shapes made from silver. The star of the collection was an XXL heart inlaid with mineral crystals to symbolise the indestructible power of love.

Another rival to the creativity of the powerful Durán and Gómez collection emerged in the shape of the new Xigera by Luxenter, the Spanish brand that has won over fashionistas with its meticulous silver designs. Emphatic shapes in pastel shades made from innovative materials like pink quartz, amethyst and fluorite sparkled on one of fair’s most attractive stands. The brand has recently been in the news for its launch of the outlet chain Karambo, which offers designs from previous seasons. If you’re flying into Madrid, don’t miss the brand’s shop-in-shop at the new Terminal 4 of Barajas Airport.

The unmistakeable designs of Belén Bajo now also have a place in Iberjoya. The Madrid designer exploits the intrinsic chromatic and formal elements of each design to create a collection in yellow gold which she combines with azurite and pyrite fragments, nautilus fossils, mother of pearl in different shapes and minerals like gabbro. These are strung into necklaces and bracelets on brightly-coloured rubber. The result is an original juxtaposition of two or three stones of different kinds, shapes and colours, like the green aventurine she combines with onyx and cornaline.

Imagination renewed
Menorcan pearl specialist Majorica presented a new image at Iberjoya. Having just refurbished its plant in Manacor and with its European growth plan in full swing –mainly in Germany, UK, France and Italy– its stand demonstrated the brand’s eagerness to rejuvenate its designs with new materials like leather, wax and silicone. The new designs are ideal for a bright spring day. Particularly striking was the elegant but lightweight River, and also Lace which decorates the pearls with gently flowing folds of material.

Burgos-based Jorge Revilla presented two silver collections with textures and colours, ranging from pink gold to yellow and white, all used in combination. Desire – with its pendants, rings and bracelets for men and women – looks to geometric shapes and flat surfaces. The romantically feminine Dreams offers ultra-long bead necklaces in colours ranging from transparent crystal to jet black, not forgetting yellow, coffee, stone-grey, aquamarine, tourmaline and soft pinks and mauves.

Antonio Soria’s spring-summer 08 collection introduces a brand new concept: all the pendants have an extra large chain in different metal shades, showing off the pendant to effect. Geometric shapes contrast with the warmth of the finishes and textures used.

Mara Diseño was responsible for one of the most “golden” collections at Iberjoya, with heavy chains linking XXL stones, pearls and honey-coloured beads. Bracelets are decidedly ethnic, while long chains curve into infinity, shying away from the geometric lines so prevalent at this edition of the fair. Chains were also the big thing from Espelt, which offers them in different thicknesses with links of varying sizes. Earth-coloured beads and pendants with arabesques and diamonds complete the collection.

Quirós jewellers make jewellery for Andalusian fashion and leather goods brand El Caballo. Their choice was irregularly shaped pearls of different sizes, long necklaces with a Spanish flavour and trademark horse-shaped pendants. Leather and silver are mixed in up-to-the-minute style.

There was also no shortage of irresistible watches, like those of Paul Versan. The brand’s “extremely sexy watches” for him with their impressive case and young, urban design are a guaranteed success this season.

The show will continue in September when the next edition of Iberjoya unleashes more creativity from Spain’s jewellers and watchmakers.
