The Madrid International Fashion Fair SIMM once again welcomed record numbers of visitors and exhibitors, when it was held at the Feria de Madrid Convention Centre from February 15 to 17. More than 800 exhibitors presented their menswear, womenswear, furs and accessories for autumn-winter 08/09.
A key factor in SIMM’s success has always been its high international participation figures and these were again impressive at this 59th edition, where leading Spanish brands rubbed shoulders with companies from Germany, France, Belgium, Brazil, the US, Italy and the UK.
Bright young things
Urban womenswear had pride of place at this edition of SIMM, courtesy of a number of Spanish brands:
Oky-Coky combined navy inspiration in angora and tweed with balloon-hemmed, French-sleeved mini-dresses in aubergine and beige.

Alba Conde
Alba Conde offered delicate prints in a subtle explosion of colour that ranged from purple to green both in her first line and second brand AC.
Selvatgi offered a formal line, a more casual line, and a more urban line, but all in combinable printed fabrics like knit and jacquard.

Ian Mosh
Ian Mosh added a new dimension to his customary organic finish, particularly in original thick-spun jackets in bright colours and patchwork compositions.
Laga took us on an attractive journey from Bilbao to London with a womenswear and accessories collection in a decidedly British pop style, using tie prints and tartan.

Van-Dos
Van-Dos, which now exports its comfy feminine style to Greece, Portugal and Japan, and for next winter offered knits in rich fabrics and a wide range of colours.
Timeless and classic fashion
Some brands stick to a classic and traditional look, as it is the case of:
Fuentecapala has used top quality fabrics in its well-made suits trimmed with fur.

Mercader

Mercedes de Miguel
Fur is also the star of the latest Mercader collection which goes for very structured sporty bombers and coloured feminine suede jackets.
Mercedes de Miguel has opted for bright colours in contrasting fabrics like wool and gauze in her next winter’s collection.
Jota más Ge looks to Europe in Lights in Amsterdam, a collection inspired by the Dutch city. The brand already sells to the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Greece, the UK, Ireland, China and Arab states and hopes to enter the Russian market soon.

Toypes

Mirto
Timeless style is also the dominant note for Toypes, which offers mustard, red and green in its most casual line, alongside black and metallic fabrics for the evening.
Mirto once again consolidates its position as one of Spain’s leading shirt-makers for both men and women, with impeccably-made classic cuts and a rich variety of prints and shades.
SIMM knit
Knitwear specialist Naulover showed why it is a leading force in the business, updating its garments with extraordinary versatility, whether in classic cardigans or floral tees. Black, red and tan were key colour choices for the winter to come.

Montoto

Dikton´s
Another knitwear producer, Montoto had an original stand where knitted garments with striking prints were centre stage.
Dikton´s also kept its regular SIMM appointment, revealing an autumn-winter 08/09 collection based on elaborate knits in discreet colours.
Special and glamorous
Partywear always has a special place at SIMM.
Drap Barcelona filled its stand with sparkling stones on rigid baguette or clutch bags with clasp fastenings, all in metallic shades with shoes to match. Colours ranged from camel to black, and other brighter options in green and red.

Mireia Bisbe
Designer Mireia Bisbe offered sumptuous silk and rich brocade for next winter’s special occasions.
Matilde Cano told us about her recent success after opening two new boutiques in Seville and Zaragoza and launching her second brand Máss for a younger target. She is also involved in project supporting young artists in Milan. The crowds at her stand showed how her up-to-date classic party style is still as popular as ever.

Charo Azcona
Charo Azcona went for evening dresses cut from gauze and wild silk in bright colours.
Accessory time
María Roca, the alma mater of bag and fashion jewellery brand Mo by María Roca, revealed the secrets of her next winter’s collection. Alongside updates of her most popular designs, like Opera, now in quilted crocodile, she offers an original vintage range in rigid lines. Colours include aubergine, stewardess blue and jade green. We also saw the Tibetan goatskin bags that have proved such a hit in Paris.
Jewellery designer Elena Cáncer has some more surprising pieces made from knots and complicated organic shapes. Their rough and irregular appearance never detracts from their glamorous sophistication.

Lola Casademunt makes more use of bright colour in accessories with stone appliqué and sequins to reflect the light.
Colour was also the key to the Yokana stand, with its floral prints and African theme, smothering accessories in rich embroidery. Its unmistakeable ethnic style features in necklaces and bracelets made from beads and silk thread.
One of the most popular stands was Uno de 50. In addition to its own collection, inspired by its now classic icons, the costume jewellery brand debuted its second line, Sin Receta, which is based on a similar philosophy to that of its bigger sister, but in more of a hippy style. Uno de 50’s own novelties focus on extra colour in attractive stones, a children’s line and original dogs’ collars.
