Firm of the month

Camper, an international success story

1 December 2003

Camper took the world by surprise in 1975 with the launch of its revolutionary new concept of “casual” footwear. 28 years on, it is now present in more than 50 countries worldwide, offering radically innovative products with no direct brand competitors.

The firm’s history dates back to 1877, when Antonio Fluxá founded this family-run business in Inca ,Mallorca. Today Camper continues to preserve the respect for tradition and quality that has always characterised the firm. The Camper brand name was created in 1975 by the founder’s grandson, Lorenzo Fluxá. His aim was to transfer the feeling of freedom present in 70s Spain onto the brand. ”My idea was to create a brand new type of footwear, unlike any other on the market: casual, unisex, comfortable yet stylish, with a strong character , that reflects my mediterranean background and my in-built family values of tradition and quality”. In his opinion the brand represented an alternative, rather than a response to market demands.

The brand’s values – design and comfort based on family style tradition and quality- have remained unchanged. The product targets open-minded consumers of all ages, although its most popular public falls amongst the 25-35 age group. The brand has loyal customers on all five continents that appreciate design and comfort. Production currently stands at 3 million pairs a year, and the shoes are exported all over the world.

The quest for quality is a fundamental aspect of Camper’s corporate culture, as reflected by its careful selection of suppliers and manufacturers. Strict quality controls are carried out at each stage of the production process. Imagination is another of the company’s strengths, with new ideas and techniques that constantly take the market by surprise. A clear example of this is the Wabi project. Considerable resources have been invested in this 100% recyclable ecological shoe that is good for the planet as well as for feet. Yet this concern with the environment is nothing new. The brand’s very first model, Camaleón, used leftovers from tyre production for the sole, canvas and leather factory remnants. These practices have earned the firm the first ever EU “eco-label” to be awarded to a Spanish footwear manufacturer.
