Think Custo Barcelona and a brand immediately springs to mind whose T-shirts revolutionised the world fashion scene. The Company turned this everyday apparel into an aspirational item and the signature of a particular lifestyle. At a time when minimalist designs in black and natural shades dominated the fashion panorama, Custo’s brightly coloured seductive designs were an immediate hit on international markets.
Media, critics and consumers all raved at the vibrant designs, daring fabric combinations and bold patterns. All these values are still in force in the most recent collections and represent the authentic hallmarks of this brand. They were such a hit that the US press started to refer to the “Customania” phenomenon. The secret behind the unstoppable success of this emblematic fashion name is its ability to come up with innovative top quality designs. But also a solid brand image backed by an efficient business structure.
Custodio and David Dalmau set up Custo Barcelona in 1996, a continuation of their earlier “Custo Line”. The enterprising brothers’ first achievement was to successfully position their business in the design and sale of innovative tops, effectively filling a gap on the market. Initially, the firm targeted the US market, where their tops soon attracted the interest of stylist directors, actors and celebrities. Their public appearances wearing Custo’s vibrant tops sparked off the firm’s commercial success. Just a few months later the New York Fashion Week invited Custo Barcelona to showcase its collections alongside top fashion names such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan.
The New York catwalk acted as a springboard and sales shot up all over the world. Today, 90% of all the firm’s sales come from overseas markets, where the brand has become firmly established. Top clients are the USA, Italy and France.
