Born in La Coruña in 1980, María Barros studied fashion design at the European Design Institute in Madrid. After traineeships with textiles firm Cadena and fashion designer Modesto Lomba, in 2000, she moved to Milan to complete her studies, writing a thesis supervised by Franca Sozzani (director of Vogue Italia). The collection she produced as a result was selected by Wella Lobacos Italy for a debut catwalk in the city of Milan.
On September 21 2001, at the age of just 21, María Barros received the Moët&Chandon Young Fashion Tribute which is awarded in partnership with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. The award paved the way for Barros’s Milan Fashion Week debut, where she presented a collection entitled From Nature to Art at a catwalk also organised by the Camera Nazionalle della Moda Italiana. After this upbeat start to her career, she joined first the Pupi Solari team in Milan, then the Roberto Cavalli studio in Florence. Her close contact with these fashion houses inspired her to create her own company and label, Ëiroa por María Barros, in April 2003, to which she then devoted her full attention.
María Barros shies away from fashion and fads in favour of timeless garments which preserve their beauty and impeccable pattern cut from season to season. She opts for a classical elegance which is always in vogue, and subtle harmony is her trademark style. Barros loves to experiment with strange garments which she admits she never actually puts on show, but which help her to express what she wants to say. Her label Eiroa per María Barros is a top-end couture range with creations verging on perfection, loved by the Italians for their “intellectual” flavour.
In Spain, María Barros began presenting her collections on Barcelona’s Gaudí Catwalk in September 2003. The Spanish designer has also presented collections at Milan Fashion Week since September 2004 and has taken part in a number of events at the Fashion Work Library Club. Having met with considerable public and critical acclaim, she abandoned the Spanish catwalk to concentrate her efforts on Italy and embark on her key objective of international expansion. In 2005, she began to produce garments in Italy. She works regularly with labels like Swarovski and Munich and plans to move into both America and Asia in the not-too-distant future.
