Peseta is a Spanish brand devoted to the production of naïve-style fabric accessories with a certain nostalgic irony. It was created by Laura Martinez del Pozo in 2003. In 2005, it teamed up with the Jaime Sevilla Moreno project and a year later opened a studio-shop at 9, Calle Noviciado in Madrid.
It started out producing limited editions of wallets, bags and handbags, but word of mouth soon made it popular and it began receiving orders from fashion boutiques, art centres, design studios, museums and bookshops all over the world. Peseta crosses the divide between the artistic and the practical.
Creativity, exclusivity, efficacy and quality are the values behind its collections which are designed to showcase the potential of a brand “outside the ordinary and outside the mainstream”.
It has also worked in partnership with Marc Jacobs (three occasions since 2008), Loreak Mendian, Lomography and the Spanish national art gallery, the Reina Sofía Museum, the Primavera Sound Festival, the Berlin Film Festival and New York’s New Museum.
Peseta produces all its accessories in Spain, but its colourful fabrics are made in more than twenty countries around the world. Ecology precedes fashion and the brand always keeps a strict watch on the environmental impact of its production. It even uses a cycle courier service for local deliveries.
As well as its studio-shop and e-shop, Peseta has 35 other POS in Spain and a further 25 in France, Italy, UK, Germany, Sweden, the US, Japan and Hong Kong. Its export rate stands at 25%.
In 2009 and 2010, it exhibited at Who´s Next Paris and as of 2011, it will be attending Tokyo Designers Week, Atmosphère Paris, London Design Festival, Rio Fashion Week and NY Fashion Week.
