Back in the early days of the 20th century the Mena family opened a small handcrafted tack and leather goods workshop in Granada. In 1967 Francisco Mena started producing the first bags under the Menbur brand name. Midway through the 1990s the company began to take off, becoming a European standard-bearer in the footwear and accessories sector.

The brand currently has three bag and footwear lines: bridal, partywear and casualwear. In 2006 it set up the company Pilar Abril targeting the urban and modern woman. It currently runs three firms: Menbur, Ingrapel and Pilar Abril.

Menbur’s designs are subject to the strictest of quality standards. It uses the finest of materials, such as satin or silk, and trimmings, such as strass or gems, and combines femininity and sophistication in its designs to create items for those very special occasions. Each season, the company launches 180 new models of shoes and 450 bags.

Over 90 people make up Menbur’s workforce and it takes part in the major trade fairs throughout the world, such as Puerta de Europa and Modacalzado (both in Madrid), CPM (Moscow), Micam and Mipel (Milan) and GDS (Düsseldorf), amongst others.

Menbur currently has over 18 standalone stores, both in Spain and abroad. It also sells its products through top multi-brand footwear and accessories outlets, both nationally and internationally. These products can be found in over 1,500 outlets throughout Spain and countries in the European Union, with Italy being its main foreign market, followed by the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, Germany and France. Exports currently account for 60% of Membur’s sales.

Its short-term plans include broadening its range of products, as well as raising its presence internationally, whether through standalone stores, corners or franchises. At the start of 2009 the company started running an online store.
