German entrepreneur Eduardo Hugo Heusch founded Majorica in 1890. His fascination for pearls led him to promote their artificial culture in the small village of Manacor on the island of Majorca where he found exactly the craftsmanship his project needed.
In 1952, the Hungarian-born chemist Geza Zsolt discovered the formula for creating artificial pearls. The secret lay in the use of natural organic marine substances, which made it possible to produce the exact look of natural pearl and exceptional quality. Thus it was that the Majorica pearl was born. The development of tourism soon turned it into a symbol of the Balearic island, contributing to the product’s expansion throughout the USA and Japan.
Now, after more than a century in the trade, and with support from the Saga group, Majorica designs and produces jewellery and accessories from pearls and other fine materials. Its classic, elegant style draws on Mediterranean influences without neglecting current trends. The latest collections combine classicism with updated designs in new materials and colours, featuring novel pearl shapes. The company is committed to the quality of each and every product and they all come with an international guarantee certificate.
A total of 25 million pearls a year and more than 600,000 items of jewellery are produced at the Manacor plant virtually by hand. Majorica sells these at more than 300 POS in different Spanish cities and 37 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Britain, Japan, Korea and Russia. Particularly significant for the Spanish company is the US market where its “Spanish Pearl” is extremely popular and which accounts for more than 7% of the company’s total sales.
