Lorenzo Caprile started out in the world of fashion with Ratti, which specialises in women’s wear and accessories. He was soon combining his freelance design for the Italian fashion house with his studies at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. He later completed his training at the International Polytechnic Fashion Institute in Florence and graduated from Florence University with a degree in Language and Literature.
In 1986, he started working for a number of top Spanish and Italian fashion houses including the Cadena group, where he was involved in the design of its collections and had sole responsibility for the design and production of the catalogue. In 1988, he went to Rome to become assistant to Italian designer Pino Lancetti on his prét-â-porter and accessories collections. A year later he joined the production department of the Finanziario Tessile Group in Turin.
1993 was a particularly significant year for Caprile. After working for Lienzo de los Gazules on its Farnesio collection, he founded his own company, Lorenzo Caprile S.L. He was soon to become one of Madrid’s top bridal wear designers, setting up his own workshop in the chic Salamanca district of the Spanish capital.
After twenty years producing bridal gowns with a timeless quality, always meticulously attentive to the needs of individual brides, Caprile signed a production and sales deal with Rosa Clará in the year 2000, bringing his creations to a wider audience. His prestige in the bridal and party wear segment was further endorsed when he was chosen to design the wedding dress worn by the Spanish Infanta Cristina in 1997. He has since designed a number of evening dresses for Letizia Ortiz, who recently married the heir to the Spanish throne. In 2002, he wrote “Vamos de boda” (“Off to a wedding”), a book published by Planeta, which takes a look at his career to date.
He has also taken part in conferences and round-table debates at top Spanish universities and design schools. In May 2004, he was awarded the Telva “T” prize for Best Spanish Designer, alongside Frenchman Jean Paul Gaultier, who received the award in the international category.
