    Josep Font´s interview

Born in Santa Perpetua de Moguda (Barcelona), Josep Font studied design, pattern design and scaling at the FELI Institute in Barcelona. His first success in the world of fashion design came when he was awarded the Air France Competition prize, held in Paris in 1984, and which enabled him to exhibit his work at Paris' Costume Museum.

Josep Font presented his collection for the first time at the Cibeles Fashion Show in 1989. That same year he also had the opportunity to display his designs at the Contemporary Fashion Fair in Milan, where he returned in the summer of 1991, and at the Piscine Deligny in Paris. He has enjoyed constant success in France, where he received the national Fil D’Argent Award in 1989.

In 1991, Font set up the company Gabriela S.L. for the production and distribution of the Josep Font brand name. During the final months of that same year he opened his own stores in Barcelona and Bilbao. His Madrid store was opened in May 2000.

His international expansion continued throughout the nineties. In 1993 he was invited to participated in the Igedo Fair in Düsseldorf, which provided a launch pad for the German market. In July 1997 he presented his Spring-Summer collection in Tokyo as well as in Barcelona. In September 2002 Josep Font reached an agreement with the Paris department store Galleries Lafayette de París, which now stocks his collection in its section known as Le laboratoire des créateurs. His next major international challenge is the opening of his own Paris store, situated in Rue Sourdière, just off Rue Saint-Honoré.

Josep Font is a regular presence on the Spanish catwalks, presenting his collections at both the Gaudí and Cibeles Fashion Shows. In September 2002 he won the L'Oréal Prize for Best Collection at the Cibeles Fashion Show. During the last few seasons he has been a regular presence at Barcelona's Gaudí Fashion Show.

He has received numerous prizes and awards throughout his career. In 1996 he was awarded the Centimetre de L’Any, by the FAD Cercle de Moda in Barcelona in recognition of his career. In June 2002 he won the Khalos Award, given by TBE, the Spanish Association of Tulle, Embroidery and Lace manufacturers. In October 2000 he was awarded the T de Telva Award for the best Spring-Summer 2001 collection. Two months later he received the Esprit du Siècle bottle from Moët & Chandon, naming him Designer of the New Millennium. In November 2001 Elle magazine gave him its 2001 Style Award.

Josep Font has ventured into other sectors of design, including furniture design, working with the architect Óscar Tusquets.
