Alma Aguilar was born in Madrid in January 1976 into a family with close connections in the art world. On completing her studies in design and pattern design at the School of Industrial Techniques, she continued her professional training in the workshops of a number of designers including Laura Montero, Paco Casado and Devota & Lomba. It was with Devota & Lomba that she was able to develop her talents most fully.
Whilst combing this period of training with an initial period as a freelance designer, she created her first collection for children aged 0 to 6 for "El Corte Inglés" department stores. Her ventures into other areas of design include a jewellery collection for Ansorena (Jewellers to the Spanish Royal Family).
In May 1998 she set up her own company called Alma Aguilar and from her tiny Madrid workshop created her first ready-to-wear collection for summer 1999, and managed to establish 6 points of sale for her creations in Spain. In February 1999 she presented her second collection (Autumn-Winter 1999-2000) at the International Fashion Week in Madrid.
The first Alma Aguilar store opened on 17 April 1999 in Jorge Juan Alley in Madrid (she would later move her showroom to this very special spot). In October that same year she presented her third collection (Spring-Summer 2000), with which she also began her international expansion (Saudi Arabia and Geneva).
In November 1999 she opened her bridal wear Atelier and started to work on costume design for television. In December she participated at the 2000 edition of the Certamen Antimoda (The Anti-fashion Event) and also presented her fourth collection for the Autumn-Winter 2000-2001 season at the Madrid International Fashion Week.
In September 2001, at the age of just 25, she made her debut at the Cibeles Fashion Show, presenting her seventh collection for summer 2002 and was featured extensively in the international press (Collezioni, Italy; Wall Paper/Spruce, London Handelsblatt, Germany Fashion Shows, New York; TM Facts of Fashion, Germany Textil Zei Tung, Austria). Since then she has presented all her collections at the Cibeles Fashion Show.
