The Spanish designer has taken his inspiration from the world’s fastest mammal, the cheetah.
The jersey designed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Vuelta a España cycling race is the latest garment to join the trend in red, the colour now associated with Spanish sporting triumph.
From 2010 onwards, the leader of the Vuelta a España, which gets underway on August 28 in Seville, will don the “Red Jersey”. But the new design is not just a nostalgic look back on recent Spanish sporting feats, for the organisers have called in none other than Custo Barcelona to make the design, a brand renowned for its innovative use of colour, fabric and prints and a pioneer in bold sophistication. The commemorative jersey, which will be a limited edition only, will go on sale as a collector’s item.
Designer Custo Dalmau has given the jersey the skin texture of a cheetah, the world fastest mammal, to create a metaphor combining the cyclist and the animal. The lines that criss-cross the design symbolise the roads that will take the racers through the different stages of the Vuelta.
Custo Barcelona, a regular at New York Fashion Week, has more than 70 shops in Europe, the US, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia.
