Mango in Shanghai

Mango to open 500 new retail spaces in 2012

01/16/2012

Fast-growing markets such as China and Russia are the keys to the Spanish fashion label’s strategy.

Unaffected by the recession, Mango has put its foot on the gas with the announcement of plans to open between 400 and 500 new shops and corners in shopping centres throughout 2012. Talking to Europa Press, the company’s General Manager, Enric Casi, explained that its expansion plan will focus mainly on new markets such as China and Russia. However, Germany, France, India and Turkey also feature on the road map, and 2012 will also see Mango venturing for the first time into countries such as Myanmar, Pakistan, Angola, Sant-Martin and Mongolia, among others.

The firm also plans to continue with its shopping centre corner approach this year. It began exploiting this distribution channel in 2010 and, in the last two years, it has opened some 800 such corners throughout the world. According to Casi, this format has required a sizeable investment, and the firm hopes to see the first fruits of that effort this year.

Mango’s Sales grew by 11% in 2010, to €1,269m and, with a presence in 107 countries, less than 20% of the chain’s turnover now comes from Spain.

New logistics park in Lliça d’Amunt
Progress is also being made in the construction of Mango’s new logistics park in Lliçà d'Amunt, Barcelona. Work on the centre started in April 2011 and will entail a total investment of some €360m. The facilities in the first phase of the project are due to be up and running in 2015 or 2016.

The logistics centre, which will be the company’s largest park of this kind in the world, will boast some of the most modern technology in Europe. Garments will be distributed from here to each of the countries where Mango is present worldwide, except China, where the brand already has a local logistics centre up and running, as well as one in Hong Kong, which serves the rest of the Asian market.
