The show, which will run from 27 October to 1 November, brings together 48 of Jordi Labanda's creations.
The unmistakeable touch of the illustrator and designer Jordi Labanda, his universal chic and use of colour, inspired by the aesthetics of the 1950s and 1960s, and his finely-tuned sense of humour have been a huge success in Japan for many years. Now, the Japanese public can soak up his creativity at the Jordi Labanda exhibition. Beauty on Paper, which will be held in the Cervantes Institute of Tokyo between 28 October and 1 November.
The exhibition will include 48 pieces by Jordi Labanda, whose work has gone beyond illustration and graphic design to penetrate the fashion world with refreshing collections of clothing and accessories decorated with his trademark touch: ironic and yet distinguished at the same time.
The exhibition forms a part of the Spain Emotion initiative, which promotes Spanish art and design and was set in motion at the same time as Tokyo Designer's Week 2008. It is not the first exhibition to pay tribute to the work of Jordi Labanda, since the Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires (MALBA, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires), the National Art Museum of Mexico (MUNAL, Museo Nacional de México DF), and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona) have all housed retrospectives of his work in the past.
Jordi Labanda was born in Uruguay, but has lived in Spain since he was three years old. He started his career as a commercial illustrator in 1993. Since then he has published several books, and collaborated with publications such as El País, La Vanguardia, The New York Times Sunday Magazine and Clarín, and with magazines such as Wallpaper, Tatler, and Vogue America.. As a graphic designer he has left his stamp on designs for JVC, American Express, Alessi, Zara, Danone, Adidas, Puig Fragances, Manga Films, Pepsi Light, Nissan España, Gallery Korea, Tokyo Sisters, Dior, Target, and Neiman Marcus.
Jordi Labanda’s collections can currently be found in multi-brand spaces in Europe, America, Asia, and Australia. The designer has his own shops in Barcelona and Mexico City.
